Literacy is fundamental to all learning. It is at the heart of a child’s ability to read, write and succeed in school and beyond. Our Literacy training
program is designed to equip new and experienced teachers with the knowledge and tools they need to develop and improve literacy skills in children of all backgrounds.
The objective of this training is to build on each teacher’s repertoire of approaches to the teaching of literacy. These should include a balance of skills approaches (including the systematic teaching of reading, writing, spelling and phonics skills) and whole-language approaches (including the teaching of reading comprehension and grammar).
At the end of this training, Participants will be able;
- To carry out the integration of comprehensive approaches to the teaching of literacy in the curriculum, based on explicit instruction that enables children to read and view, speak and listen, write and shape for learning in and out of school.
- To identify the early indicators of reading and writing disabilities and develop the skills and strategies to tailor instruction so the children can learn to decode and comprehend the material, at their individual level.
- To explore the socio-cultural factors that affect literacy among children.
- To Work individually with children, either reaching into or pulling out of the class, and how to work with other teachers on staff development, all while becoming a better teacher yourself and gaining competency in dealing with struggling children.
